The stories of Bear and Casey are best told in the words of their loving father, a wonderful man, who has been of enormous help to us in our struggle to help needy dogs. I wish there were more people like him out there. Please read on.

These are Bear and Casey. Casey was a local adoption up in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, where their owner had recently lost his two miniature schnauzers -- also rescue dogs -- and missed the canine companionship. Casey was used to having other dogs around the house, though, so I got in touch with The Cocker Spaniel Adoption Center.

We'd just heard of a schnauzer mix in a shelter in Maryland, scheduled for euthanasia on a Tuesday. I called Monday and said he'd take the "35 pound" Bear, and he arrived that Saturday to find 85 pounds of hound.

Bear, though not the sharpest tool in the canine shed, is the sweetest, and I don't understand why anyone would turn such a swell guy in to the pound. Neither do the four or five folks who have laid claim to Bear if things didn't work out with Casey, a territorial pup if ever there was one. But they are now a happily bonded pair, and it's basically one of those Happily Ever After type endings.
