What a tragedy is this. Special, precious Robert, who had been through so much suffering in his short little life, has left this world, after knowing such a brief time of happiness. We think he died of heart failure, the victim of too much neglect and abuse in his former days, and though he seemed okay, he had only so many heartbeats left. Everyone who knew him, especially his foster and adoptive mother, are devastated.

Robert was so special, he won Haldago Bay's Snugglebum Award and he was named CHRISTMAS DOG for 1998. These awards helped him find a home and the love of a special lady and her Jack Russell Terrier, Robert's best buddy.

Robert's story is beyond sad. He was originally abandoned by his "family" at a Maryland shelter in terrible condition. He was emaciated, with mats so thick, they weighed more than his entire body, and he had to be shaved to the skin. He was in foster care so long, his hair actually grew back. He was far more handsome than this picture reveals, and I think he was pretty adorable even with shaved hair. Look at that smile. It says it all.

It was amazing how Robert came around after a life of evident abuse. His mother told us he was the happiest little guy, and he learned to love life so much. I sincerely wish he had been granted more joyful days before he was called to Rainbow Bridge. I  am heartsick at his loss but thankful that he loved and knew love for his last year of life.
